Born in Neath, South Wales, UK in 1970, I have lived and worked in Neath-Port Talbot most of my life.
Before going to University I took instruction from the late Swansea artist, Mike Freeman, alongside my A Levels, which gave me my most valuable skill knowledge.
I graduated from the University of Reading, Berkshire, England in 1993 with a Fine Art Bachelor of Arts Degree (with Honours). Following that, I undertook commissioned portraiture, equine and canine art while working full time and raising my two sons.
I live in Port Talbot in South Wales, famous for its steel works and Hollywood actors, Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen. Living on the beachfront, I am lucky enough to be able to walk my dog along the magnificent long strip of beach that pans out from the drama of the remaining Steel Work cranes to the beautiful Swansea Bay and the famous Mumbles, Swansea. The nearby wooded Afan valley embraces the coast, lending further inspiration. Its a perfect backdrop to my primary passion of music, which is the driver for my practice.
I love music of most genres. It is a constant companion and influences my work, particularly pop culture. It is integral to my practice, stirring up feelings, thoughts and ideas.
I work primarily with acrylic on canvas. The intensity of concentration that realism demands, I occasionally break this form with more expressive work, using watercolour, mixed media and my imagination. Each practice informs the other and keeps me from going stark raving mad in the pursuit of perfectionism; it's a form of release and keeps my practice fresh. Working in a realistic way requires solitude, focus and tranquillity that I acquire from my studio. Music is integral to the process. Music informs my subject matter. I have a unique relationship with my subject, often a ‘conversation’ ensues and we share intimate secrets, it feels.
My studio is located above Studio 40/Queen Street Gallery in Neath. The solice of the studio has become integral to how I work.
I am open to commission work at my discretion. I require a 50% Non-Refundable deposit once agreed upon and before any work is undertaken.
I look forward to working with you.
